Self-Publishing For the First Time!!!

For as long as I can remember, books have been my life.  I've been reading ever since I was old enough to recognize the funny symbols on the colorful pages as words and to link them together to make stories come to life.  My parents encouraged my love of reading and eventually I majored in English and writing from Southern Oregon University.  I wanted to share my love of books and writing with others, so I decided to get my Master of Arts degree in teaching to spread the joy.

I've always had stories locked away inside of me just dying to see the light of day, and I have wanted to share my stories with others.  Living in such a small town far removed from any major city (I live in Weed, CA, which almost exactly halfway in-between San Francisco, CA and Portland, OR), has not granted me the opportunity in which to get friendly with any publishing companies, nor am I willing to change my stories around to fit with what editors, who know nothing about me, wish for me to write.

I have heard horror stories from many authors who are well published, all ranging from having to remove portions of their stories to fit within the page limit of that particular publishing lot, from having to change their stories completely due to the fact that the editor does not like the direction it is going in.  In fact, several favorite authors of mine have told me that the reason they haven't been able to continue writing the series I fell so in love with was because their editors requested that they write different books in a completely different genre because the company is moving in different direction.

That is why I am very thankful to Kindle and NOOK for allowing authors to self-publish their works - because the authors are able to maintain all of their rights, dignity, and creative expression and can tell their stories the way they've always wanted to.

So what do you all think?  Is self-publishing with eBook empires the new wave of the future for books? How do you feel about that?
